Raymond Himberg operates a TN Duroc nucleus farm with 240 sows in Sandefjord, Norway. He is known as a dedicated pig breeder, always seeking improvement and innovation. Raymond: “It’s a different world, working with a terminal line, in contrast to a maternal breed. You need a different mindset.”
The herd is Topigs Norsvin SPF, making it an important export herd for TN Duroc boars. Currently, there are TN Duroc boars from Himberg in 14 countries across the world. Recently the Himberg nucleus contributed to an export to both the Netherlands and Brazil. Raymond personally inspects all animals leaving the farm for export. He ensures that the pigs going to quarantine are of high quality.
Being a TN Duroc nucleus farm also means performing at top level. Day in and day out. “We do our best every day and are proud to be part of the Topigs Norsvin journey. It is a lot of work, but it is also very satisfying. I enjoy getting feedback from the different markets. It adds another perspective to the day-to-day job.”
The Himberg nucleus works, just like all pig farms in Norway, with loose farrowing and no tail docking. Finishers and gestating sows are all loosely housed in deep litter pens measuring 15.5 by 5 meters. Sows farrow in batches of 80 in a farrowing unit of 930 m2. The farm is equipped with two of these units. It provides a nice working environment for Raymond and three full-time employees.
